Our paper on necrobotics—the use of biotic materials in robotics applications—has been published in the open access journal Advanced Science. Led by Faye Yap, we repurposed the inanimate body of a spider as a robotic gripper.

My kids want to try to replicate your necrobiotic spider experiment! (Saw it on NPR.). Can you tell us what needle & sealing glue you used to do this, and where we can buy them? Thank you! So cool!
Thanks for reaching out! We used “krazy glue” (product number KG585) and a 25-gauge hypodermic needle. You would also need a syringe to apply the pressure (they can be purchased separately or in packages together with needles). These supplies are available on amazon and other online retailers. The assembly of the necrobotic grupper poses safety risks regarding the sharp needle and the high adhesive strength of the glue, and we encourage anyone replicating the work to take the appropriate safety precautions.
